John A. Altobelli
|| Mr. John Altobelli, former chief executive officer of the International Foundation, passed away on March 21, 2012.|
In 1988, Mr. Altobelli was chosen to lead the International Foundation headquarters. In his 15 years as CEO, he oversaw the Foundation’s expansion into new technologies and educational offerings. During that time, the Foundation grew from a $9 million organization to a $24 million. The number of educational programs offered each year expanded from 35 to 110.
A few of the milestones under his tenure include:
- Established an endowed chair at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1993)
- Developed the educational outreach programs with the Department of Labor (1995)
- Introduced the Foundation’s first website (1995)
- Launched the Certificate Series and Certificate of Achievement in Public Plan Policy (CAPPP)
- Awarded the contract to provide logistical and programmatic assistance to the National Summit on Retirement Savings by the Department of Labor (2002)
Prior to working with the Foundation, he was vice president of personnel and labor relations with Dominick’s Finer Foods in Chicago. He served as a management trustee for three Taft-Hartley benefit funds associated with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. Earlier in his professional career, he was a teacher and counselor in the Chicago public schools and taught at Thornton College.
Mr. Altobelli was a graduate of Roosevelt University, beginning as a music major and switching to a history major. He was a civil war buff, and often toyed with the idea of getting a doctorate in history.
He is survived by his wife Evy , their four children: Beth and Johnny, both of whom work at the Foundation, Kristi (Jeff) Story and Pete (Mary) Altobelli, brother Louis (Louise) Altobelli. John had eight grandchildren and many other extended family members.
